5 Ways to Find Inspiration with Waletta Dunn
When was the last time you rode a rollercoaster? Remember the feeling of barely moving up the incline on the way to the top? Sometimes the rollercoaster would move so slow that it felt like forever to reach the crest. Then the car would whip over the apex and race down the hill. Your body felt weightless, and you knew for sure you were going to fall out of the car.
Sometimes writing can be just as exhilarating. It is exciting when the words roll into sentences and the sentences surge into paragraphs. Before you know it, a complete story is sitting in front of you. I call it my “sweet spot.”
But getting to the sweet spot can be agonizing. It’s a long ride to the sweet spot when you must work for every word, strain for every sentence, and push for every paragraph. That is when a little inspiration is needed to stimulate your creative juices.
I’ve found a few ways to find the inspiration and build momentum in my writing. I’d like to share my top five ways to reach your inspiration sweet spot.
- Pull out the old photo albums. Study the images. What happened just before the picture was taken? What happened after the picture was taken? Write the story. Or create a new one based on how you would change the outcome.
- Call an older family member. Older family members have a plethora of experiences, and most are willing to share. Ask questions and learn about their lives. Be sure to take notes. You will learn more about your family and yourself, and perhaps be inspired to turn an old story into a new one.
- Listen to music. Music is a great tool to inspire creativity. Turn on your favorite song and relax your mind. Jot down thoughts and ideas as they come to you.
- Watch the news. Find an interesting headline and be creative. How would you change the story? Create your own ending. Change the setting. Make it your own.
- Change your scenery. Go for a walk and stir up your imagination. Release your mind of stress and worry. Some of the best ideas surface when you are not looking for them.
I hope you find these tools useful. Writing has its ups and downs, but it is worth the ride.
