People and animals have more in common than sharing space on the same planet. On two sides, my home faces densely wooded areas that contain a healthy population of gray-brown feral rabbits. I like rabbits, and I enjoy watching them from my office window as they sun themselves in my yard. When two of the rabbits invaded my garden and devoured half of my crop of Blue Lake bush beans, I smiled and said, “You missed some.” By the next morning the beans were completely gone.
Last summer, I found a rabbit lying in my yard. Sadly, he was dead. I looked him over but saw no sign of injury or trauma. My wife and I are avid animal lovers, so we tried to show the little animal the respect we felt it deserved. We wrapped it in a neatly folded blanket of paper towels, and then took it to the edge of the woods. After taking my shovel and digging a deep hole, we gently placed the wrapped rabbit in the hole. I filled in the hole and tamped the earth firm. After placing a small white quartz rock as a marker, my wife and I stood hand in hand and looked lovingly at the small makeshift grave.
And that’s when it happened, true story. Two rabbits suddenly appeared, sat at our feet one on each side of us, and looked down at the little mound of dirt. It was as if they had joined us in paying their respects to a departed friend. We didn’t move, afraid that it would frighten the little creatures. We stood there motionless waiting for the rabbits to take as much time as they wanted. Finally, a few minutes later, they hopped toward the trees.
It was an emotional experience, and both of us had tears in our eyes as we saw them disappear into the forest. That moment was special to me. I shall never forget it.
