The Catch on ABC – Review

In case you haven’t catched it yet, The Catch on ABC airs Thursday nights 10/9c.

The Premise from ABC

Alice Vaughan (Mireille Enos) is LA’s top private investigator — and the one woman you don’t want to mess with. But when her fiancé (Peter Krause) cons her out of millions and disappears, Alice goes on a private mission for payback.  No matter where it leads or the secrets she must keep along the way, Alice will stop at nothing to catch her man. From the producers of “Scandal,” “Greys Anatomy” and “How to Get Away with Murder,” “The Catch” is a one-hour drama starring Mireille Enos, Peter Krause, Alimi Ballard, Jay Hayden, Jacky Ido, Rose Rollins, Elvy Yost and Sonya Walger.  The Catch is executive-produced by Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers, Allan Heinberg and Julie Anne Robinson.

The Premise from me

LA’s top private investigator, Alice Vaughan is conned by her fiance. Her mission is to find him and either kill him or hire him.

My Thoughts

I missed the pilot when it aired—The season finale of Shades of Blue was on. However, I was able to catch a repeat of it on ABC via the Roku. The commercials looked good, I thought it would have been kind of like Mr. and Mrs. Smith (the movie that ended Jennifer and Brad’s marriage), but was pleasantly surprised that it was not.

I have to say it was decent. It started off with Alice Vaughan (Mireille Enos) undercover, working at a museum. Her mission is to catch the person who trying to steal a priceless painting. The setup was a bit predictable but the takedown was satisfactory.

Her next mission was not so successful, actually it was a con orchestrated by her so-called billionaire fiance played by Peter Krause, of course she doesn’t know that. He slipped out right under her nose, leaving her and her people scratching their heads. I guess even the best detectives can be duped.

Christopher’s (Krause) has what he needs from his latest victim, Alice, and is about to wrap up the job, but alas, he has fallen in love with the mark. I have to say I saw that coming. Afterall, viewers like a good love story, and what’s better than a good love story? A love-triangle. Turns out the head of the band of merry cons, is Christopher’s lover, played by Sonya Walger (Margot Bishop). Let me tell ya, Margot is one scccarrryyyy biatch.

If you’re stealing, steal it all

To me, if Christopher really wanted to do some damage to the mark, he could have stolen everything from her, and I mean everything! Instead he stole her client list. Boo hoo and millions of dollars from her savings. The thing with that is, you would never know anything was stolen because she, Alice is still driving her white Benz, her glass walled office is still up and running and she still have her swanky apartment and all the trimmings. So I’m not really feeling the thievery. From the preview, they showed her standing in an empty room, giving me the impression that he took everything—including the toiletpaper. See for yourself below.

We learn about their love story in periodic flashbacks. This is where we start to form an emotional connection to the characters. Especially for Alice, she was all in. Now, the chemistry between the actors is not of the best, but I think they are still finding their footing in the role. So, I’ll overlook that—but the idea is there.

There are two storylines going on at once—where duped Alice is trying to find “Christopher” and the other, her cases as a PI (girlfriend’s gotta eat). The PI part takes the form of the regular procedurals, think Castle, Lucifer (different network, I know), The Catch part features “Christopher” and his con buddies. To me that is the fun part of the show. The cons the writers come up with is good enough to keep me watching. Granted the cons are not up to Leverage calibre but it is decent enough.

I am all caught up with the episodes. So far I look forward to it, it has passed my three episode probationary period. I can’t help but wonder about the longevity of the show though. If she is such a good PI, surely she would eventually find him. Every week he gives her the slip. When she catches him, then what?

The show is produced by ABC’s star-girl, Shonda Rhimes, nothing against her and all, but her shows don’t interest me. I can’t stand the run-on dialogue and the forced drama. How long before The Catch goes the way of Scandal or Grey’s? I used to be into Grey’s before all the silly dialogue and over-talking Ms. Rhimes’ series are known for. I do like the diverse cast, and strong female representation in all her shows. I tip my hat to you Ms. Rhimes.
