What inspired you to write Operation K-9 Brothers?
I’ve always been fascinated by our military heroes, and I often wonder about the difficulties they face when they return to civilian life. Operation K-9 Brothers, Keeping Guard, and Mountain Rescue, the three books in this series (all out this year), are about three SEAL teammates… what happened to them and the challenges they are facing. The last thing they want or expect is to fall in love, but life is full of surprises, right?
What can we expect from you in the future?
I have some stories brewing in my mind, but my concentration right now is on the Operation K-9 Brothers series, so I’ll let those future stories simmer until I’m ready to start a new series.
How did you come up with the concept and characters for the book?
I’m often asked that, and the answer is… I don’t know. A character or a story idea will just pop into my head, and I honestly don’t know where they come from.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
I did a lot of research on military war dogs and therapy dogs, and it was really fascinating, especially the military dogs. How they’re trained was really interesting, but my favorite was a book I discovered that was stories of actual war dogs, how they’re chosen, their handlers, and their missions. Like their human teammates, these dogs are true heroes.
If you could spend time with a character from your book, whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?
I’d spend time with my hero in Operation K-9 Brothers, Jack Daniels, a.k.a. Whiskey. First, he’s easy on the eyes, so I’d probably spend most of my time just staring at him. LOL Also, he’s funny and kind and protective of those he cares about. He’s a dog whisperer, so I think it would be fascinating to watch him work with dogs. Basically, I just love everything about him.
Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?
OMG, they totally hijack the story. All. The. Time. But it’s usually for the best, even though I don’t think so when they’re doing it.
What did you edit out of this book?
Well, I deleted the first three chapters and started over because by the end of the third chapter, Jack had met the woman of his dreams, had his issues solved, and had his happily ever after. So, I had a very short story. Ha! So, I started over and changed everything.
About the Book
Operation K-9 Brothers Book 1 by Sandra Owens
Genre: Military Romance
Synopsis
Navy SEAL Jack Daniels (save the jokes, he’s heard them all) and his trusty Belgian Malinois sidekick, Dakota, are back home in Asheville, North Carolina, after a bomb left them scarred. Unable to accept that he’ll never be able to return to his team, Jack is looking for a miracle. What he isn’t looking for is a permanent relationship, though he’s open to a no-strings distraction at the magic hands of gorgeous local potter Nichole Masters.
Nichole is on a losing streak with men. Her ex-boyfriend won’t stay gone, a competitor is out to ruin her business and even her rescue pup, Rambo, is refusing to get in line. A chance run-in with a navy SEAL turned canine companion trainer might solve the dog problem. The fact Jack is easy on the eyes doesn’t hurt, either.
But when Nichole feels like she’s being watched, Jack is the only person she can turn to. He’s a protector and problem solver by nature and training. Accepting his protection is one thing—Nichole didn’t count on falling in love.
