Mia Kayla’s Journey as an Author

Today’s guest post is by Mia Kayla, author of Marry Me for Money.

I started writing Marry Me for Money (MMFM) in May of 2012. I didn’t know what I was doing, all I knew was that I wanted to write a story and I did. The scenes were so vividly playing in my head and I knew I had to get it down on paper and after six weeks, I’d completed approximately 50,000 words.

During this time, I knew I wanted to improve the craft so while I was writing I also took Romance I from Gotham’s Writing School online.  With working full time, three kids and a husband at home, I could only commit to an online class.

I finished the book in March of 2013 and sent the manuscript out for first beta reads in April. I didn’t write straight through as there was pregnancy and baby born in between. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with the story once it was completed. All I knew was that I loved Beth’s journey and wanted to share it with a wider audience.

During this time, I’d been following the trends and reading up on self-publishing and decided at that time, because I’m fickle, that was the route I wanted to take. I contracted a book cover designer and hired an editor well in advance because the good ones book up quickly.

In September of 2013, I decided I wanted to try the traditional route because I change my mind like I change my underwear. Right before I went back to work, I queried agents and publishers. As the weeks trickled by, I received 2 requests for partials, 1 request for a full and some rejections.

I continued to read on self-publishing and successes of many authors that have taken that route. What was beneficial was learning the pros and cons from hybrid authors of both worlds.  I still had a full request out, when I decided to go full force and self publish and it has been a whirlwind of fun every since.

The greatest thing about this journey is the emails I receive from readers who have enjoyed Beth’s story and are waiting for the next one. These emails and PMs makes me smile – big and cheesy style.

The 2nd biggest reward was meeting other writers. In the beginning, I so desperately wanted to bond with other writers and pick their brain so I joined my local RWA chapter and every online writing forum to learn more about the business and to improve my writing. Unfortunately because of mommy guilt biting me in my little booty, I gave up going to my local chapter meetings. It’s okay because most of my relationships were built online. Over two years later from starting this journey, I am only now able to connect with other writers who today I can call my friends.

Brian Burcham, a finance banker, is gorgeous and respectful. A man plucked from Beth’s dreams, he is definite husband material. Unfortunately, Beth has a hard rule against dating coworkers, but Brian is determined to change her mind.

Mia Kayla is a New Adult/Contemporary Romance writer who lives in Illinois.

On the weekdays, she can be caught wearing a suit, commuting to her corporate job in downtown Chicago and raising three beautiful munchkins in the suburbs, four if you count the husband.

In her free time she loves reading romance novels, jamming to boy bands, catching up on celebrity gossip and designing flowers for weddings.

Most of the time, she can be caught on the train with her nose in a book sporting a cheeky grin because the main characters finally get their happily-ever-after at the end.

She loves reading about happy endings but has more fun writing them.
