I have been sooooo super excited for the release of Man from U.N.C.L.E not because my latest book is entitled Bad Uncle, but because of Henry Cavill (more on Henry Oh Henry later) … the preview I saw looked amazing!
Synopsis
In the early 1960s, CIA agent Napoleon Solo and KGB operative Illya Kuryakin participate in a joint mission against a mysterious criminal organization, which is working to proliferate nuclear weapons.
Man from U.N.C.L.E was written and directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander and Hugh Grant.
I’ve always enjoyed the movies I’ve seen from Guy Ritchie, most notably RocknRolla with my ultimate hottie Tom Hardy. In reading a bit about Mr. Ritchie for the purpose of this article, besides the obvious he was Mr. Madonna at one point, I found out that he never went to film school and at 15 he was expelled from secondary school. Rumor has it, and by rumor I mean Wikipedia stated that he was expelled for either drug use or “entertaining a girl in his room”. Either way it is wonderfully scandalous, he makes Adriana Banovic look like a saint.
On to Henry Cavill, oh Henry. Henry Cavill was placed on my radar via The Tudors in which he played the unforgettable Sir Charles Brandon. Best friend and confidante of King Henry VIII played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers. These days most Americans know him as Man Of Steel.
Let’s take a moment to appreciate Mr. Cavill in all his finest. This picture inspired me to write the character of Roman Jensen in the first version of Family Portrait. If you are following the series, you’ll have to wait a bit longer to meet Mr. Jensen. He doesn’t come in this much later.
This one is just a teaser. You’re welcome, ladies 😉
Anyway, I always felt that he would make a good modern James Bond, don’t you? He has a very debonaire look about him, not to mention he sure can rock a suit.
He wears them very very well in Man from U.N.C.L.E.
Henry was once considered the most unluckiest man in Hollywood, because he auditioned for many leading roles but didn’t get them. I think it just wasn’t his time. Now he’s getting out there and I really hope to see him in more roles besides Man Of Steel. He has a lot of talent, very diverse, but you know Hollywood, so we’ll see.
Armie Hammer. Is it just me or does his name brings to mind Arm and Hammer. Could it be because his real name is Armand (Douglas) Hammer?
You may remember Armie from The Social Network the movie “loosely based” on Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg where he played the Winklevoss twins. Most recently he had a small part playing himself in Entourage the movie. He was in the The Lone Ranger (2013) but I don’t think anyone saw that. He played the prince in Mirror Mirror, which suited him, he has a look like a fairytale prince. Don’t you think?
My Review
This movie was well worth the 1hr 56 mins. I spent in the theater. I was completely entertained from the opening till the end.
The characters were very likable, Armie and Henry had great chemistry, with each other and with the female lead played by Alicia Vikander. I love the snappy exchange between both actors, each had classic lines which worked with their character’s personalities.
The action kept me on my toes, the car chases were done with vintage cars which was nice to see. Obviously, the cars were from the ’60s to correspond with the movie’s timeline, as were the fashion worn by both ladies; funky earrings and eyelashes for days.
Despite the timeline in the movie, the women were portrayed in a very dominant role, at times upstaging the men, but not in a bad way.
I loved the comedic element of the movie and so did the audience that sat in the nearly half empty theater. One of the lines that had us laughing was when Henry’s character described Armie’s character as barely human, he referred to him as “it” saying things like you should have seen “it run,” and “it ripped off the trunk of a car.” Henry delivered his comedic lines with swoon-worthy swagger. Armie did a very good Russian accent, with little quirks like a horrible but non-threatening temper.
The most memorable scene for me would be when Armie’s character is driving the getaway boat and doesn’t realize that Henry’s character is not on the boat with him. In fact Henry’s character is sitting in a truck eating a sandwich and we see absolute mayhem in the background with the bad guys chasing Hammer’s character and causing all sorts of explosions.
I loved everything thing about this movie, the way it was shot, the tone, the storyline, everything. I hope they continue the franchise there is still so much about these guys and girl that I want to learn more about.
