I love to read and I read a lot but one thing I find I really can’t do is read a book twice. Some people seem to really enjoy doing this and some don’t. I think I fit into the don’t category. Are you someone who reads a book and then pick it up again later, maybe months, maybe years and re-read it? I’ve tried to reread books but I just don’t enjoy it and it sometimes ruins the story for me. I just don’t quite enjoy it the same. One of the following seems to happen for me:

  • I pick up a book, I know I really enjoyed and start reading it but because I remember it so well I find myself skimming really fast. So it doesn’t have the same impact it did the first time. It really just turns out to be a trip down memory lane.
  • I start reading a book but I know where the good parts are so I skip to them and read mostly only that part.
  • I start reading a book and think I’ve read this before but I don’t quite remember it, so I spend the whole time I’m reading trying to remember what the book is about and where the twists are, etc. So I kind of miss out on the whole story. I don’t really get to experience it again.
  • I start reading a book I know I liked and I find that it doesn’t quite hit me the way it did the first time. I don’t think there is anything worse than realizing that book that you thought was awesome, is now meh.

For these reasons I tend not to re-read a book I’ve read before. I don’t want to change that original impression and feeling the book gave me. I want to keep that novel as my favorite and not have it end up in the ‘it’s okay pile’ the second time around. How about you, can you read a book twice?

  1. I agree, I never reread a book either. I love being so drawn into a story I am taken into another world. If I already know what comes next the book does not have that power to take me there. I love Maggie Thom’s books because they have instantly drawn into that other world and keep me there til I turn the last page.

    1. Thank you Alisa, so glad you enjoy my books. 🙂 I too feel that feeling of being drawn into a book gets lost if I already know what’s going to happen. 🙂
