Kyle Shoop Talks Writing Clean Romance

Author of The Sound of Love, Kyle Shoop shares why he writes clean, sweet romance.

I was recently asked why I like to write “clean” romance. I was also recently asked why I chose to write “sweet” romance. I think it’s funny that I write in a genre which doesn’t really have a single name. I’ve seen “clean,” “sweet,” and “wholesome” all used – as well as a combination of them. But regardless of how the genre is categorized, my answer to the question remains the same.

Recently, I realized my answer is similar to why the shark in the movie Jaws is rarely seen. Did you know that the movie Jaws is 2 hours and 10 minutes long, but that the shark is only on screen for 4 minutes?! Crazy, right? Despite barely ever seeing the shark, the build-up is immense and the outcome satisfyingly scary.

Of course, there’s a well-documented history about the technical problems they had while shooting the movie which led to rarely showing the shark. But the resulting lesson is undeniable. Sometimes suspense is best experienced without giving the audience too much.

In terms of romantic suspense between two characters, I think that same rule can also sometimes work for not showing/telling too much sexual action between two characters on the page.

It’s not a single rule I go by, nor do I think it works for all stories, but it makes sense for the stories I’ve wanted to tell so far. The purpose of my new “Senses of Love” series is to tell compelling love stories.

Love is experienced and expressed in a wide, almost infinite, amount of ways – and sexually is just one of them. For me, I want to focus on stories where love is the heart of what the reader experiences. For the stories I’ve been interested in telling so far, that means having the romantic suspense and stories of deep love heightened by holding off describing the sexual action too much.

Hopefully the resulting emotional ride for the reader is as strong as it is for the audience’s reaction to not seeing the shark on screen in Jaws. I’ve been encouraged by the abundance of positive feedback received from readers, so I’m inclined to believe that the less from Jaws does also translate to the romantic book genre.
