10Qs with Author Kim Bartosch

How long have you been writing? When did you start?

I began writing when I was just twelve years old. My passion for books had already taken root even before that, and I absolutely adored reading. Then, one day, it struck me: “Hey, I can write a book too!” And that’s when I started my journey. I began keeping a journal, crafting short stories, and eventually, I even took a shot at writing a novel. My very first novel was a sci-fi masterpiece, kinda like Star Wars, because, you know, I’m a massive Star Wars fan. Unfortunately, that novel never reached the finish line, but it ignited the creative spark that kept me writing, and eventually led to the birth of my debut novel, “ASK THE GIRL.” 📚💫

Why this genre?

I’m a total fan of ghost stories and paranormal creatures like vampires, werewolves, and ghosts. Plus, whenever I visit new towns and cities, I’m all about those ghost tours to soak in the history, legends, and the whole mysterious vibe. I’ve given other genres a shot, but I’ve realized that I just adore writing the kind of books that I can’t resist reading.

What does a successful writing career look like for you?

I feel a successful career means publishing two or more books a year. I wish I could churn out more, but it’s a real time-eater, and, you know, I’ve got a life beyond my writing – like my family and all that. While making some cash from my books would be awesome, I figure as long as readers enjoy my stories and love my characters as much as I do, that’s the best success a writer and storyteller could hope for.

Are you indie-published or did you go with a traditional publisher?

Right now, ASK THE GIRL is out there through Woodhall Press, a small and traditional publisher. I’ve really enjoyed the personal touch they bring to the table, but you know, there are plenty of reasons why I might consider going the self-publishing route or partnering up with a big, old-school publishing house. It all boils down to one thing: marketing. I mean, you can write the most fantastic bestsellers, but if nobody knows about them, they’ll just be gathering dust on that metaphorical bookshelf.

Plus, if I decide to self-publish, I’d get to keep all the money and royalties without having to split it with a literary agent or publisher. That’s a double win! So, as I look ahead to my next book, DEVINE MONSTERS, I’ve got some major decisions on my plate. Should I self-publish or go for an agent or a big publisher? Let the pondering begin! 😊📚

What advice would you give to new authors?

I’ve got a nugget of advice for you: Never, ever throw in the towel. If writing is your dream, you’ve gotta stick with it to make it real. I read somewhere that there are over a million books published every year, both independently and traditionally. The authors who make it are the ones who don’t give up. Writing is a craft like acting or painting, and if you want folks to love your masterpiece as much as you do, you’ve gotta put yourself out there, conquer that imposter syndrome, and push through any other fears you might have. Just keep going! 😊

Do you have any writing issues, and how did you overcome them?

Oh, absolutely! I’ve been dealing with grammar and writing mechanics challenges for quite some time now. I sometimes think I might have a mild case of dyslexia because I tend to jumble words and sentences. Plus, I’m forever mixing up past and present tenses when I write. My solution? I edit like a pro. I even have a favorite quote hanging in my office: “It’s totally fine to write garbage—as long as you edit brilliantly.” – C. J. Cherryh.

What surprised you the most about the release of your new book?

What really caught me off guard was the whole marketing thing. I used to think that once I got my book out there, I’d be kicking back, soaking in the applause, and watching the cash flow in. But that’s not how it works, especially if you’re an indie or a small press author. You’re constantly hustling to promote your book on social media, at events, bookshops, schools, libraries, and festivals. Of course, if you ever hit the big leagues like Stephen King or J.K. Rowling, you’ll have a whole team handling all that for you, and your name alone will be enough to sell your books.

What marketing techniques work for you?

Since my book is aimed at young adult and teen readers, I’ve discovered that my success in marketing it has come through a writing organization I joined before my book’s launch, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI.org). This awesome organization has local chapters in every state and country, and they’ve offered me a ton of opportunities to sell and promote my book.

I’ve also had a success on Instagram and quickly built up a big following on “Bookstagram.” It’s been a big help in promoting me as an author and my book.

What is the hardest part of being an author for you?

The trickiest thing is juggling your life, your writing gig, and promoting your book. I gotta plan my day down to the minute to stay on track with everything. My calendar’s like a colorful mishmash of tasks I gotta nail to be a pro marketer, an awesome author, a super mom, and a loving wife. And in the midst of all that, I’ve gotta carve out some space for my mental and physical health, too. 🌈😅

What do you do to relax?

I love reading, going on hikes with my dog and family, and I’ve recently started doing Hot Vinyasa or Hot Yoga. In this type of yoga, you work out in a room cranked up to a toasty 95 degrees Celsius. It’s pretty intense, but when I’m done and lying on the mat with a cold lavender towel on my head, I can feel the stresses of life just melting away. I totally recommend trying it, as long as your doctor gives you the green light!

Bonus question: What is your favorite recipe or restaurant and why?

Growing up in Kansas City, Missouri, I’ve got to say my all-time favorite spot is Joe’s KC, also known as Oklahoma Joe’s. They serve up the most amazing barbecue, and you won’t want to miss their mouthwatering burnt ends on Wednesdays and Saturdays. But, remember to show up early, as they vanish quickly once they’re gone – and you’ll have to wait until next time!
