Some people don’t like the taste of cilantro, they think it tastes like soap and may prefer parsley. The opposite is true for me. When you buy these leafy herbs you get them in bulk. Keeping them fresh can be a task in itself. Here’s how you can save money by keeping them fresh for a long time.
By the way… this super simple method of keeping cilantro fresh works for parsley as well. You don’t have to run out and buy any fancy herb savers or gadgets. These are things you already have in your kitchen.
As soon as you get home, get an empty glass jar, (hopefully, you’re up-cycling your jam or peanut butter jars) quarter-fill it with clean water, and put your leafy bunch stem-side down in it. DO NOT remove the binding that keeps them together. Don’t wash them yet, water will cause them to mildew.
Next put a large sandwich bag or the clear produce bag from the produce section over the leaves. Tuck the bag under the jar and put it in the fridge on any shelf.
When you are ready to use it, take it from the fridge, only release the amount you are going to use from the bunch, wash it, and put the rest back into the fridge like before.
I am telling you, this hack will save you money, less waste, and keep your cilantro or parsley fresh for a long long time.
See the pictures below. As you can see after one month it was still fresh. I bet it would have gone way past a month if I didn’t have a hankering for pesto.
