Let’s talk about covers for a few minutes. Before ebooks exploded and back when there were a lot of different bookstore chains readers could visit, I used to spend a lot of time wandering around and looking at covers. I’d go to a bookstore and check out the books on the tables and endcaps. I’d pick ones off the shelves. Often what made me pick up a book was the cover. In fact, that was almost always what made me pick up a book.
A lot of people say they don’t care about covers. I still do. And I love romantic suspense covers. They tend to have one of two types of photos – a sexy couple or a sexy guy alone. I’m a fan of both, but I really like the hot-alpha-guy covers. They totally telegraph what’s going to be in the book. For FALLING HARD, the Avon art department did a great job. The tattoos are right. The look of the hero is right. The mood is right. You can tell by looking at it that the book stars a tough, determined protector type. He is the kind of guy who steps up when there’s a problem. You don’t even need to turn the book over and read the cover blurb to know that.
And then there’s the gun. The hero on the cover – West Brown – is holding a weapon. That, alone, tells you a lot of what you need to know about him. The casual clothes, the gun, the sure stance – those all work.
Regency historicals tend to have women in pretty dresses on the covers. A lot of small town romances have porches or chairs without people these days. Sexy romances have beautiful people in sexy poses. With so many reading choices out there, I really love when I can get an idea of a book just from looking at the cover. So, if you look at FALLING HARD and think quiet marine in a dangerous situation, you’re right. 🙂
