As the author of 9 books, there are several tools that have helped make my writing experience more comfortable. As writers, all we care about is getting our ideas on the screen or on paper. We seldom give any thought to our comfort or the little tools that can enhance our writing experience.
One of them is my trusty desk riser.

The Alternative to a Standing Desk, the Desk Riser
Sitting for a long period of time is never a good idea. Even when I worked at my 9 to 5 my employer gave me the option of a standing desk. Standing desks were not really a thing yet so they were expensive. When I transferred to working for myself at home I wondered how I could ditch the dining room table for a standing desk. When you’re starting a business every cent counts so I started looking for cheaper alternatives.
Walmart had a standing desk by Mainstays that I would not recommend, it tips because there is support on one side and it is shaky as hell. I couldn’t even use it as a regular desk so I had to pony up and buy a real desk. I stacked boxes on the desk to give me the height I needed, but that worked until the boxes got soft.
Years passed and more companies started making standing desks and making them more affordable. At this point, I had no place to add another desk so found desk risers on Amazon. I’ve been using this one for over a year and I love it!
Button-Click Electric Standing Desk Converter, 34 Inch Height Adjustable Desk Riser with USB Charging Port Wide Keyboard Tray, Sit to Stand Home Office Lift Desk for Dual Monitor Laptops
Here’s why I love it!
- It has a wide desk top that holds multiple laptops or has room for pen holders or accessories. Who doesn’t appreciate more space?
- It is super easy to extend and lower, even if it takes up the entire desk area that you set it on, you can lower it to use it while sitting.
- I love the keyboard piece in the front. Installing it is totally optional but I use it as a hand rest and as a desk to take notes.
- There is a slot in the front to hold a tablet screen which I hardly ever use. I put pencils in mine.
- I am tall so it extends to the perfect height for me. (I had another riser and it was too short.)
- The whole system is super sturdy. Be careful it is very heavy.
