Today’s guest post is by Charity Ferrell. Charity recalls the first time she hit publish on Amazon, you know that terrified feeling, kind of like “OMG what the hell did I just do?” I get it everytime I publish a novel. It never goes away (I hope). Enjoy!
My journey as an author has definitely been a prodigious experience and I can’t wait to find out where it’s going to take me. I still find it crazy when I refer to myself as an author, see books on shelves that I’ve written, and receive messages from readers.
Writing has always been a release for me. For years I said, “When I get older, I’m going to write a book.” Then one day, I asked myself why I was waiting. Why was I waiting until I was necessarily older? There’s no age requirement for when you can put your work out there. I sat down, opened up my computer, and started writing. I found myself staying up all night, tapping away at my keyboard, because I couldn’t stop a scene. I couldn’t sleep because characters were screaming out and telling me to let their story out.
I started my first novel, Beneath Our Faults, in October 2013 and finished it at the end of that year. I wrote every single day. And still almost do. When it came time to release it to the world, there were so many emotions running through me. I was anxious, terrified, and elated all at the same time.
I told myself I would’ve been satisfied with only selling a few copies. I’d be able to say I put it out there, tried, and didn’t give up. I still to this day remember the first book I’d sold. I got a message from Amazon telling me my book was live on their site. That’s when I saw I’d already sold my first book. I looked over at my boyfriend and said, “Oh my gosh, I’ve already sold one and I haven’t told anyone to buy it yet!”
My debut novel, the one I was terrified of releasing, made it into the Top 100 on in the New Adult & College and the Coming of Age genres on Amazon, which was exciting as a new author. My second novel, Karma, was released in June.
The most satisfying part about becoming an author is the feedback. I love getting messages from my readers telling me they cried, laughed, and fell in love with the story. It’s the best feeling in the world to know I evoked all of those emotions out of somebody. Readers are most sincere people and I can’t wait to hear more from them. They are the reason I put my work out there.
Thank you for having me on your blog,
xoxo,
Charity Ferrell
