Are you ready to take the plunge?
The world of new adult is still in its prime. It’s the perfect time to dive head-first into a sea of novels. Or, if you’re like me, maybe you prefer to get your feet wet first? Try a novel or two? See of it’s your “thing”? Totally understand. It’s a new genre that didn’t exist a couple years ago and now there’s a plethora of books out there. It can be overwhelming. Where do you start first? Here’s a list that I hand plucked off my own shelves. I promise they’re worth a try.
BURYING WATER by K.A. Tucker
A dark read about a girl, Water, who wakes up with no memory of who she is or how exactly she got in the hospital in the first place. With only a tattoo on her hip and a shadow in her mind, Water has to uncover the secrets of what landed her in her new life. Problem is, sometimes the truth is worse than lies.
This novel hooked me with its powerful topics wrapped up in beautiful writing. It’s a story that I couldn’t figure out until the very end. Perfect for fans of gritty thriller reads.
FOREPLAY by Sophie Jordan.
Foreplay follows the story of Pepper, a girl who is completely in love with her best friend, Hunter. In an effort to make Hunter notice her as more than a friend—and more specifically…experienced in the bedroom—Pepper decides to take passionate pointers from a well-known bartender, Reece, who has a dangerous past.
What I loved about this novel is that it’s sweet, which I wasn’t expecting. Pepper goes through such a personal growth and Reece isn’t actually who he seems, in a good way.
SLAMMED by Colleen Hoover
Moving to a new town has its own complications, especially for Layken, who is grieving the unexpected loss of her father. Trying to be the rock for her mother and younger brother, Layken doesn’t show just how much she’s hurting. But that doesn’t stop next door neighbor Will from seeing through to the deeper parts of Layken. With his passion for slam poetry, Will expresses grief of his own. Neither expects just how closely they’re tied, or what could bring their romance to a halt.
I liked that this book had slam poetry, something I’d never read about before. I also respected that the characters were dealt hard hands, and that each showed incredible spirit and courage.
DEPTHS by Steph Campbell and Liz Reinhardt
Depths is a fun read about Cohen, a guy who gets dumped because he’s not impulsive enough, and a girl, Maren, who works for Cohen’s parents’ furniture business—and who just might be the girl Cohen didn’t know he needed. Once dumped, Cohen goes on as many dates as possible. But no one makes him laugh like Maren, whom he’s only ever spoken to over the phone…until one day, when she asks the question: Do you want to meet?
I laughed almost constantly while reading this book. The interactions between Cohen and Maren are organically fleshed. It’s real, simple, natural. And the chemistry is both tender and spicy.
RAW BLUE by Kirsty Eager
Carly spends her days surfing and her nights working, a constant stream of busy—mostly to forget what happened to her two years ago. With painful memories, Carly sticks to herself. That is until she meets Ryan, a local surfer. Suddenly the bitter sting of her past rears to the surface like a wave, threatening to swallow her…or send her riding the swell of her life.
The characters in this book are exquisite and the writing is maybe even more so. The ocean is a vivid emerald…the wind ruffles the wave faces so they shatter the sunlight like glass…I forget about the underbelly of things, my secrets, and I feel easy and free. RAW BLUE is a powerful story about recovery and resilience.
So, readers, I hope you too take the plunge into new adult literature, and as always…happy reading!

Until You Find Me (Until You Find Me # 1) by: Amber Hart
Releasing: November 11th, 2014
Loveswept: Flirt
Amber Hart pushes contemporary romance to its wildest limits in this heart-pounding novel, the story of a girl who travels to Africa to protect the legacy of one man . . . and stays for the love of another.
Raven Moore, a twenty-year-old college student from Michigan, feels out of place in the beautiful, treacherous jungles of Cameroon, staying in the habitat where her father gave his life to help protect endangered gorillas. He left home years ago; now Raven refuses to return home until she unravels the truth about his last days.
Raven certainly doesn’t count on crossing paths with a handsome young hunter—especially one as charismatic and intense as Jospin Tondjii. Instantly, she’s hooked. But Jospin is hiding a dark truth: He is the heir to a powerful poaching empire, part of a ruthless black market that is responsible for the dwindling gorilla population.
Their fathers may have been enemies, but Raven and Jospin forge a bond that goes beyond blood, a relationship that is tested as Raven draws closer to the source of her father’s death. Can she and Jospin bear the weight of the secrets of the wild—and the secrets of their pasts? Or will the rain forest destroy them both?
