What inspired you to write Broken Dreams?

I’ll tell you what inspired Lathan. He’s a hearing-impaired, motorcycle riding, tattooed, alpha male, virgin hero. You’ll love him. He’s my favorite. And I really shouldn’t have favorites!

For my day job I’m a mental health counselor. Part of being a counselor is that I must attend a certain number of workshops to be able to renew my license. I was at one of those workshops when Lathan strolled into the room.

Let me explain something. Historically, counselors are not the trendy people. We tend to be frumpier and nerdier than those in normal society. We’re not the cool kids.

So, I was at this workshop, sitting in the back of the room, away from everyone, because I’m an introvert and didn’t want to talk to anyone. I looked up at the doorway. And there’s Lathan.

Picture a motorcycle club hero. Tall. Broad. Muscular. Drop dead gorgeous. My heart fluttered. He wore a black biker jacket. He carried a helmet. He was way too cool for this group of people.

I totally stared. He walked to the front of the room and sat down at an odd little table right next to the podium. His back facing the room.

I was little confused. Obviously, he was not the presenter, but why was he sitting at the little table next to the podium? He just sat there staring straight ahead.

I was still staring.

Then a young woman walked up the opposite side of the table, facing him and…

Began signing to him.

I may have gasped out loud.

He was hearing impaired. And utterly perfect.

I was fascinated by his masculine way of signing back to her. The very male movement of his hands and fingers; almost dismissive like she’s more of an annoyance to him than anything.

I couldn’t tell you what the workshop was about because I spent the entire time watching him. Studying him. He was… Lathan.

Sigh…

I’ve had friends ask me if I went up to him and introduced myself. OMG. No way. I’m way too introverted. I wouldn’t have had a clue what to say. I would’ve tripped over my own feet or choked on my own spit if I tried to talk to him. He was so good looking. *fanning myself* And I’m a married woman!

But he’s what inspired Lathan.
